Subcollections

The collection of Museum Maluku consists of various collections, archives and groups of material. Each subcollection has its own history, provenance and context.

What is a subcollection?

A subcollection is a group of collection items that belong together. Sometimes because it involves the same type of material — photographs, objects, archival records. Sometimes because the material comes from one person, family or organisation and has been preserved as a whole.

In archival terms, that second type is called an archive, and the person or organisation that built it up the archive creator. Anyone looking through someone’s archive sees not loose items but a life or an organisation captured in documents: letters, reports, photographs, minutes. It is precisely the connection between those items that makes them meaningful.

Below are first the four main groups into which the collection is divided, and then a number of the archives the museum manages.

Featured subcollection

A 004 — S. Metiarij / GIM

The archive of Semuel Metiarij, minister and for many years a central figure in the Moluccan community in the Netherlands.

The archive consists of reports and correspondence from the Badan Persekutuan (until 1966) and the Badan Persatuan (from 1966 into the 1990s). It also contains items about the RMS struggle, covering activities both in the Netherlands and in the Moluccas. Furthermore, the archive largely consists of reports and correspondence about and with social and church organisations in the Netherlands. In addition, there are documents relating to the hostage-takings during the 1970s.
