About us
Cookie Policy
This page explains which cookies and similar techniques Museum Maluku uses, why we use them and how you can change your preferences.
In short: this website sets the cookies it needs in order to work, and counts visits with our own counter, but only if you switch that on. We do not advertise and we pass nothing to advertising networks.

What are cookies?
A cookie is a small file that a website stores on your computer, phone or tablet and reads back later. It lets the site recognise your device between one page and the next.
Websites also use similar techniques that do the same thing without being called cookies. The best known is browser storage, where information stays on your device until you clear it. This page covers both, because for you the difference does not matter: in each case something is kept on your own device.
Which cookies do we use?
There are two on this website: what the site needs in order to work, and the counting of visits. Marketing is absent, because we use nothing for it.
Necessary
Needed to deliver what you asked for: keeping you signed in to your basket, remembering your language, showing opening times in your own time zone and protecting forms against abuse.
No consent required, and no switch: without these the website does not work.
Statistics
We count which pages are visited and what is clicked, using Open Web Analytics. It runs on our own server: the measurements go to no other party, and there is no Google Analytics, no tag manager, no tracking pixel and no advertising technology on this website.
Your IP address is anonymised before it is stored and the measurement is not linked to an account or an e-mail address. Parameters that may carry personal data or access codes are removed from the stored addresses automatically.
These measurements are kept for 14 months and then deleted.
Off until you switch it on yourself. If you do not, nothing is loaded and nothing is counted, and the website works exactly the same.
Marketing
Not present. Nothing about your visit is shared with advertisers, and there is no advertising technology on this website.
Nothing to consent to, because nothing of the kind is loaded.
Cookies on museum-maluku.nl
This is the complete list. Everything in it is set by the museum itself, the statistics cookies included, because that counter runs on our own server. No other party keeps anything on your device.
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Category | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| session_id | Museum Maluku | Keeps your session together: your basket, the form you are filling in, and protection against misuse. | Necessary | 7 days |
| frontend_lang | Museum Maluku | Remembers whether you are reading the site in Dutch or English. | Necessary | 1 year |
| tz | Museum Maluku | Your time zone, so opening hours and dates are shown correctly. | Necessary | Until you close your browser |
| website_cookies_bar | Museum Maluku | Remembers that you have seen the cookie notice, so it does not reappear on every page. | Necessary | 400 days |
| presence.focus | Museum Maluku | Browser storage. Records which browser tab is active, so live updates go to the tab you are looking at. | Necessary | Until you clear your browser storage |
| presence.lastPresence | Museum Maluku | Browser storage. Records when you were last active in the tab, for the same purpose. | Necessary | Until you clear your browser storage |
| owa_v | Museum Maluku | Recognises your device between visits, so a returning visitor is not counted as a new one. Holds a random number, no name and no e-mail address. | Statistics | 364 days |
| owa_s | Museum Maluku | Keeps the page views within one visit together, so a five-page visit counts as one visit. | Statistics | 364 days |
| owa_c | Museum Maluku | Remembers which campaign link brought you in. Only set if you arrive through one; the museum does not currently use them. | Statistics | 60 days |
| owa_b | Museum Maluku | Helper value for the same counter, for older browser storage. | Statistics | Until you close your browser |
| im_livechat_history | Museum Maluku | Browser storage. Keeps the messages of a live chat conversation on your own device, so the conversation is still there if you move to another page. | Functional | Expires on its own |
External services
On pages with a form we use a CAPTCHA, a check against automated spam that we run ourselves. Your browser does a short calculation locally and sends only the result to our CAPTCHA server.
Your IP address and technical request data are processed to limit abuse. This data is not used for advertising or tracking and is not shared with Google or Cloudflare. The visible check is not loaded on pages without a form.
Everything else your browser loads to show you a page comes from our own servers.
Your choice
For cookies needed to deliver a website you asked for yourself, the law requires us to inform you but not to ask consent. Everything under Necessary falls under that; you cannot switch those off here and still have a working website.
For the statistics we do ask. They are off until you switch them on in the cookie notice, and you can undo that at any moment. Refusing or withdrawing later costs you nothing: the website works exactly the same, we use no cookie wall, and it never costs you access to a page, a ticket or a form.
Sharing statistics does help us a great deal: it tells us which information you want to see and which you do not.
If the museum ever adds something that needs consent, we ask for it first, it stays off until you say yes, and it is on this page before it is switched on.
Changing your preferences
You can always come back to your choice. The button below brings the cookie notice back, with your current answer filled in, so you can change it.
You will also find the link in the footer of every page of this website, under the name Cookie Policy, so you never have to look for it or clear your browser data to change your mind.
Your browser settings
Besides the button above, every browser lets you view, delete and block cookies yourself, and clear stored data for a single website. How that works differs per browser; you will find it under settings, usually under privacy.
Do bear in mind that blocking all cookies stops the necessary ones too. Your basket and your language choice will then no longer be remembered.
Changes to this policy
When the website starts using a new technique, this page is updated before that technique goes live. The date at the top shows when this text was last changed.
Contact
This cookie policy is about what is stored on your own device. How we handle personal data more broadly is described in our privacy statement.
Questions about cookies or about your data can go through the contact form.
