Why volunteers matter

Museum Maluku is a community museum, a living archive and a knowledge institution at the same time. A great deal of what that takes is done by people who are not on the payroll: receiving visitors, running a programme evening, describing a photograph so it can be found again, helping a family search through the collection.

That work is not decoration around the museum. It is part of how heritage stays reachable and how generations keep meeting each other around it.

These are areas, not open positions. Depending on the vacancies of the moment, volunteers contribute in different places within the museum.

You bring time, experience, knowledge and skills. That is something other than an extra pair of hands, and we try to treat it that way.

Work that means something
A volunteer role has a purpose you can name. If we cannot explain why the work matters, it is not a role.
Clarity
What the role involves, how much time it asks and what is expected of you is stated in the vacancy itself, before you apply.
Guidance
You get the introduction the role needs and someone to turn to. Nobody is dropped into the collection on their first day.
Care
Working with heritage, stories and communities asks for care. That applies to everyone here, volunteers included.
Mutual respect
Your time and your expertise are worth something. We ask for what a role needs, not for whatever is available.

Who is it for?

Volunteers at Museum Maluku come with different backgrounds, ages, experience and skills. What a role needs differs per role.

Affinity with Moluccan heritage and respect for the community and its history matter. Specific knowledge or experience, where a role asks for it, is always stated in the vacancy.

I started because I wanted to know more about where my grandmother came from. Now I help visitors find their way, and I hear a piece of that history back from them almost every time.
