Description
Vliegende hond. In de Molukken wordt de vliegende hond kalong of mursegu genoemd. De kalong behoort tot de grote vleermuizen. Overdag slapen ze groepsgewijs terwijl ze 's avonds uitzwermen op zoek naar voedsel. Het gezichtsvermogen van de vleermuis vertoont overeenkomst met de radar. Bij het wegvliegen en tijdens het vliegen zenden ze hoog-frequente trillingen uit die echo's geven waarop ze zich perfect kunnen oriënteren. Ook het reukvermogen en het gehoor van de kalong zijn sterk ontwikkeld. Vliegende honden zijn vegetariërs die zich met vruchten, honing en stuifmeel voeden.
