What can we make possible together?

Museum Maluku works with organisations, makers, researchers and institutions who want to help preserve, research, share and develop Moluccan heritage. Do you have an idea where our collection, knowledge, community or expertise could add meaning? Then we would like to find out what we could build together.

What are you working on?

Developing an exhibition

Collection context, historical background, research and public programme around a subject you are presenting.

Discuss an exhibition

I am researching something

Collection-based research, exchange of knowledge, joint projects and publications.

Discuss research

Making something educational

Teaching material, school projects, workshops and heritage education.

Discuss education

Organising a cultural or public programme

Talks, film, music, workshops, dialogue and programming with and for communities.

Discuss a programme

Working on digitisation or digital access

Digitisation, metadata, online access, documentation and the infrastructure underneath.

Discuss digital work

Looking for something long term

Knowledge exchange, shared infrastructure, international cooperation and a joint agenda across projects.

Explore a long-term partnership

What can Museum Maluku bring?

Not every item for every project. What fits depends on the subject, on rights and on what we can carry alongside our own programme.

Collection
Objects, photographs, documents and archive records, where they are available and where rights holders, lenders and the sensitivity of the material allow it.
Knowledge
Historical context, collection knowledge, research expertise and the institutional memory of an organisation that has been doing this for decades.
Connection
Where it fits, Museum Maluku can help make connections with relevant perspectives, makers or organisations. People are not an audience we supply.
Programming
Experience with exhibitions, talks, dialogue, storytelling and public programmes.
Network
Ties to cultural, heritage, research and community organisations.
Platform
Visibility, digital channels and programme context, when the collaboration genuinely fits what the museum is for.

What do we expect from a collaboration?

Relevance
The project connects meaningfully to Moluccan heritage, history, knowledge or community, and not only to our name.
Reciprocity
Both sides put something in: expertise, capacity, knowledge, resources or reach. A partnership is not one party doing the work for the other.
Care
Heritage, stories and people are treated with context and respect. Content and cultural care are a precondition for us, not an afterthought.
Clarity
Roles, responsibilities, planning and ownership are agreed and written down.
Realism
Ambition matches the capacity, budget and time that both sides actually have.
Durability
Where possible the collaboration leaves something behind: knowledge, accessibility or a relationship that outlasts one moment.

We receive more ideas than we can carry out. That is why we look at relevance, reciprocity, planning and available capacity — and why a clear proposal helps us more than an enthusiastic one.

What could a collaboration look like?

Written as examples, not as case studies. They show the shape of an exchange rather than a project that ran.

A regional museum

develops an exhibition about a former Moluccan residential camp. Museum Maluku contributes collection context and historical expertise; the partner brings local research, production and the space to present it in.

A university research group

works on migration history. Museum Maluku contributes collection knowledge and research context; the results become a publication or a public programme rather than only a report.

An educational organisation

develops teaching material about Moluccan history with us, combining historical sources with formats that work in a classroom.

A cultural organisation

builds a programme around music, identity and diaspora. Museum Maluku contributes historical context and connects the contemporary work to collection and heritage.

A technology or heritage partner

works with us on lasting digital access to collections or exhibitions, with attention to open standards and to who maintains it afterwards.

From idea to collaboration

You do not need a finished plan. A clear starting idea and an understanding of why Museum Maluku is relevant is enough for a first conversation.

A useful first proposal answers seven questions:

  1. What do you want to make, research or achieve?
  2. Why Museum Maluku — what makes us relevant to this?
  3. What are you asking from us?
  4. What do you bring yourself: expertise, capacity, budget, network, venue, research, production?
  5. Who is it for?
  6. When would it run?
  7. What is left afterwards — knowledge, accessibility, a relationship?

Too vague to answer

“We would like to collaborate with Museum Maluku.”

Enough to start

“We are developing a public programme about Moluccan music history for autumn 2027. We are looking for historical context and possible connections to the collection. We bring the venue, the production and the programme budget. We would like to explore whether Museum Maluku can contribute content and knowledge.”

When does another route fit better?

A collaboration means both sides put something in. If what you need is a service, these routes will get you an answer faster.

Sponsorship and partnership are not the same thing. In a partnership both sides contribute to a shared project; support is mainly financial or in kind. Businesses are welcome as partners where the subject genuinely aligns — with expertise, technology, pro bono work or infrastructure.

Collaboration for the long term

Some collaborations outgrow a single project: shared research, collection development, knowledge exchange, digitisation, education, programming or the infrastructure underneath. We are glad to explore what a longer relationship could look like, without promising a formal status in advance.

Between the Netherlands and Maluku

Museum Maluku wants to strengthen the exchange of knowledge between the Netherlands and Maluku. Collaborations around research, heritage, collections and knowledge development can be part of that. We work from exchange and shared learning: institutions in Maluku are partners with their own expertise, not recipients of ours.

Who we work with

Museums and heritage institutions, cultural organisations, education and knowledge institutions, archives and libraries, municipalities and public bodies, community organisations, makers, foundations and funds, and technology partners — where the subject genuinely aligns.

Do you have an idea?

Tell us what you want to achieve, why you want Museum Maluku involved and what you bring yourself. It does not have to be worked out yet.

After we receive it we look at whether the subject fits and whether there is enough capacity to explore a collaboration further. Sending an idea is a request to explore, not an agreement.

Nog niets geregeld is ook een antwoord.

Thank you, we have it

We will look at whether the subject fits and whether we have the capacity to explore it further, and we will let you know either way.
