The research was commissioned by the Moluks Historisch Museum. Henk Smeets spoke about this in an interview with the museum: \\\\\\\"The Moluks Historisch Museum took this on and asked us to carry out the research and produce the publication.\\\\\\\" The museum is also listed in the colophon, alongside publisher Bert Bakker.

Why this publication matters
This is the book with which the museum delivered on its own research mandate. It grew out of the 2001 commemoration and was written with a team of young Moluccan researchers, whose sub-studies and oral history formed its basis.
