From 26 February: ‘Afgestoft’ with Yara Jimmink
Over the past few days a great deal of work has gone into a new layout of the exhibition space at Museum Sophiahof. After showing the work of multidisciplinary artist Sebastiaan Boot, from Sunday 26 February 2023 Museum Maluku presents the project 'Pala: You Can't Eat It Without Breaking The Shell' by documentary portrait photographer Yara Jimmink. Her work is part of the exhibition 'Afgestoft: Membuka Tambo Lama' until Monday 10 April 2023.
Yara Jimmink
Yara Jimmink (1990) is a documentary portrait photographer based in Amsterdam. She graduated in 2020 from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. In her work she deals with various themes such as migration, family and collective memory. Her Indo-Moluccan-Dutch background sparked her interest in other cultures.**
Pala: You Can't Eat It Without Breaking The Shell
Yara is fascinated by the way colonisation has left its mark on our present, and by how present and past will always remain intertwined. Her search for her origins continues in her newest work Pala: You Can't Eat It Without Breaking The Shell. At its heart is the connection between the Banda Islands, where her grandmother was born, and the Netherlands, where Yara herself was born and raised.
