Discover the power of Pencak Silat at Museum Sophiahof!
On Saturday 20 July 2024, Museum Sophiahof and Museum Maluku warmly invite you to a unique event devoted entirely to the Indonesian martial art of Pencak Silat. Together with the Dutch Pencak Silat Federation (NPSF) we are putting on a day full of inspiring workshops, spiritual experiences and culinary surprises.
From 11.00 until early evening you can take part in a range of Pencak Silat workshops, where beginners and advanced practitioners alike can develop their skills. You can also let yourself be carried along by sessions on spirituality and breathing that bring body and mind into balance. Enjoy delicious dishes at our food court and browse special stalls with spiritual jewellery, gemstones and more.

The Sophiazaal
12.00-13.00: Adult self-defence workshop, West Javanese Cimandé style | The Old School: Stephen Ghazi An accessible workshop for a broad audience. Practical, realistic situations are the starting point. How can I best defend myself using my body, and what do I need in order to do so? Open to everyone: strength and suppleness are not decisive, technique is.
13.00-13.45: Talk show Pukulan Nusahitu Solemata | Dean, Hanan & Zulfiqar Umarella This talk show is about the only recognised Moluccan Pencak Silat style: Pukulan Nusahitu Solemata. Dean, Hanan and Zulfiqar Umarella together tell the story of Samad Umarella, their father and the founder of this style, with the help of a video.
14.00-15.30: Presentation on Pencak Silat in the Netherlands | NPSF: Olivier Blancquaert & Bradley Jacobs The Dutch Pencak Silat Federation gives a presentation on Pencak Silat, interspersed with demonstrations by various Pencak Silat groups. Expect demos by Daya Batin, Geu-Ling Panca Bela, Mande Muda & Jokotole and music from the Kendang Pencak Silat group.
16.00-16.30: Demo & talk show | Moluccan Fighters: Mika Tahitu Moluccan Fighters will give a demo of one-on-one kickboxing techniques. Afterwards founder Mika talks in a talk show about the mission and vision of Moluccan Fighters and shares his personal story.
16.30-16.45: Demo | Guru besar Tjada Timisela Tjada Timisela closes the programme with a demonstration of the Moluccan martial art Pukulan Ama Laka. Expect the fan dance, parang panjang jurus Ama Laka.
The museum garden
The programme in the museum garden is organised by the NPSF. All workshops are open to beginners and advanced practitioners alike.
11.30-12.00: Breathing workshop | Pukulan Cimande Kombinasi: Bradley Jacobs For explosive activities such as a martial art, breathing is very important. In Pencak Silat, breathing takes on a deeper meaning when it is combined with a particular way of seeing and experiencing the world. Learn to connect your breathing and your energy, strengthening the control you have over your body and ultimately over your fighting techniques as well.
13.00-14.00: Peupeuhan workshop | Gillvan van Ham Peupeuhan is a Pencak Silat style from West Java in which the art of fighting with the fist is highly developed. Within this style, a block or an escape without striking is not acceptable. Find out more about this form of Pencak, built on the effectiveness and speed of its techniques.
14.00-15.00: Bukti Negara workshop | Naga Kuning Institute Join the Bukti Negara workshop by the Naga Kuning Institute. A style that emphasises Bela Diri and has its origins in the Netherlands, America and Indonesia.
15.00-15.30: Introduction to the Golok tournament Attend the introduction to the Golok tournament and learn all about the rules.
15.30-17.00: Golok tournament Experience the tension of the Golok tournament, a unique competitive variant of Pencak Silat. Come and watch participants compete for the prestigious Museum Sophiahof Cup, presented to the winner by Museum Sophiahof director Emma van Proosdij. Do not miss this spectacular contest with the machete!
16.00-16.30: Beginners' workshop Join the Pencak Silat beginners' workshop! Discover this beautiful martial art under the guidance of Stephen Ghazi. Open to everyone, even without experience. Be inspired and learn the basics of Pencak Silat with us.
