Afgestoft: on Moluccans in the Netherlands

Tuesday 21 March 2023 marks 72 years since the first ship carrying large groups of Moluccan families arrived in the Netherlands. A day for both Moluccan and Dutch society to pause and reflect on a life-changing journey. But the history of the Moluccan communities in the Netherlands goes further than that great arrival in 1951 alone.
Art and creativity in all their facets are essential to recording and telling Moluccan narratives. As in the exhibition 'Afgestoft: Membuka Tambo Lama', this public programme centres on (de)colonisation, rich indigenous culture and its translation into the present by artists and creatives. Over the years art has, alongside the many objects and archives, shaped the collection of Museum Maluku, and it continues to enrich the museum collection today.
Programme
During this afternoon, Rio Lekatompessy and Uriël Matahelumual of the podcast Molukse Takkie guide you through the programme. As hosts they talk with multidisciplinary artist Sebastiaan Boot and documentary portrait photographer Yara Jimmink. Sebastiaan will then perform his live act 'Zwaar Vaarwater'. Curator Huib Akihary talks about how the 'dusting off' of the collection is going, and artist Aar fills the hall with his music. The afternoon opens and closes with an authentic traditional performance from Tanimbar by song and dance group Lima Diti. Afterwards there is the opportunity to eat at Taste of Maluku at your own expense.
