Christmas greetings from the past
Our archive does not consist only of official documents, atlas maps or correspondence with government bodies. Museum Maluku and its collection have been shaped by the Moluccan communities and by everyone who holds the museum dear. The collection grew out of donations from across those communities, whatever they contained, and is therefore extensive and varied. Because most of our collection consists of gifts, the museum holds many objects that are not always used in historiography or exhibitions, but that are nonetheless particularly interesting.
Every month our intern Moesha dives into the archives to share remarkable finds with you. This month she came across something delightful: a collection of Christmas greetings from the past.
Sinterklaas may not have left the country yet, but the first Christmas cards of the year are already on their way. To people around the corner or to family members abroad. Sending Christmas cards is a tradition that has existed for centuries, even if it happens more often digitally these days. Christmas cards are sent within the Moluccan communities too, not only now but in the past as well. We know that thanks to the large number of Christmas cards in our archive. These cards give a small glimpse of the close relationships between different Moluccan families. From our archive, therefore, we are glad to send you Christmas wishes from the past.
