External exhibitions: working together and advising
Museum Maluku makes its own exhibitions, which can be seen at Museum Sophiahof in The Hague. In 2022, for instance, came the opening of the semi-permanent exhibition Ons Land – Decolonisation, generations, stories, created together with the Indisch Herinneringscentrum. Earlier, Museum Maluku made a series of 7 art exhibitions under the name IKAT. Last year the temporary exhibitions Afgestoft and Uitgepakt! followed.
Mobile exhibitions But Museum Maluku also has smaller, mobile exhibitions that are lent out on request for shorter or longer periods. These include the 10 banners about Pattimura, or the panels of Mari Lihat and Tijdelijk Verblijf, which tell the story of Moluccans in the Netherlands through themes such as the Moluccas, independence, the RMS, the crossing, the camp period, the neighbourhood, radicalisation and emancipation. In 2023 Tijdelijk Verblijf, along with some objects from the collection, was on view for several months in Deventer at the Masohi foundation. At present Tijdelijk Verblijf is on loan to the Dutch police in Utrecht until early June. The most recent exhibition, Uitgepakt!, featured more than 250 objects from our own collection. That turned out to be a direct hit. Following this exhibition, Museum Maluku received many loan requests from around the country: Groningen, Breda, Lunteren, Waalwijk and Nistelrode.
60 years of the Waalwijk neighbourhood 2024 is a commemorative year for the Moluccan community in Waalwijk. It is the year in which the community wants to look back on exactly 60 years of Moluccans living in Waalwijk. "We would like to mark it with both Moluccans and non-Moluccans," says initiator Usman Santi. Part of it will be an exhibition that the Moluccan community will put together with the municipality of Waalwijk and with help from Museum Maluku. Museum Maluku's contribution consists not only of museum advice but also of lending objects from the collection that illustrate the history of the Moluccan community in Waalwijk.
Sejarah Nistelrode Under the title Sejarah (history), an exhibition about the history of the South-East Moluccan community in Nistelrode opens at Nistelrode Library on Saturday 11 May. Their story is told in words and images across successive periods, from 1940 to the present. Pascal Amukwaman of the organising team says: "The South-East Moluccan community in Nistelrode and the North East Brabant Libraries (NOBB) have joined forces to make an exhibition about South-East Moluccans. Among other things there will be a scale model of the Donzel camp, where 70 Moluccan families lived. A reconstructed barrack room from the camp will also be on view." Museum Maluku is lending some 30 objects to furnish the barrack. The exhibition can be visited until Friday 12 July during the opening hours of the library on the Parkstraat in Nistelrode.
