Maluku Shorts
On Thursday 9 November 2023, Totaal Moluks and Museum Maluku are glad to welcome you to Maluku Shorts, an evening full of unique short film screenings straight from Maluku. Let yourself be taken to beautiful places such as Piliana on Seram and the bustling city of Ambon. During this unique evening we also give an exclusive screening of the film 'Mimpi di ujung senja': a film about a young man named Pa'a from Kisar near East Timor. After the films we talk with Jamie Schaduw of Totaal Moluks: what influence do new media have on the transmission of culture and language?
For the Moluccan diaspora in the Netherlands, passing on culture and language has always been a challenge. If you live in a Moluccan neighbourhood, for instance, you probably pick up the most of it. If you grow up in the city, you have to rely on moments with your family or on going to a Moluccan pesta. But with the enormous influence of new media, the transmission of culture and language also takes place on your smartphone. Especially as more and more media from both the Netherlands and Maluku become available.
3 film screenings
At Maluku Shorts we will watch three short films, ranging from 15 to 17 minutes, made by young winners of the AMGPM Short Film Festival in Ambon. The stories take us to Piliana on Seram, to Ambon and to Kisar near East Timor.
1. Ninivala (winner, Best Film category) Ninivala is a sacred and mythical spring in the village of Piliana, in the east of Seram. The short film Ninivala tells of the importance of balancing the preservation of local culture and wisdom with the development of tourist destinations to boost the local economy.
2. Mimpi di ujung Senja (winner, Best Director category) A film about a young man named Pa'a from Kisar (near East Timor). He has just finished secondary school, but because of limited means he has postponed continuing his studies. He decides to stay on Kisar for now to help herd his father's sheep. Mimpi di ujung Senja can be seen exclusively during Maluku Shorts.
3. Sodara seng sedarah (winner, Best Actor category) A film about the lives of two brothers who live in Ambon for school, far from their parents in Welora on the island of Dawera (Maluku Barat Daya). The older of the two deals with worries and problems he would rather hide from his parents. The Moluccan philosophy of life 'Hidup orang basudara' is also beautifully conveyed in this short film.
PROGRAMME & TICKETS
The evening is hosted by Museum Maluku together with Totaal Moluks. We open the evening with the 3 short films. Then, with Jamie Schaduw, the founder of Totaal Moluks, we dive into the impact of new media on the transmission of culture and language.
