On Sunday 21 March the Moluks Historisch Museum launches the virtual temporary exhibition IKAT ('interwoven'). Twenty-one artists of Moluccan descent or with a connection to the Moluccas take part in this exhibition. In a relay of 7 blocks they take turns and respond with their work to the Moluccan presence in the Netherlands. Photographer Ed Leatemia from Rotterdam opens with a series of 14 portraits of Moluccan role models. Because of Covid-19 the temporary exhibition IKAT can for now only be visited virtually. The exhibition runs until 31 October 2021.
Twenty-one artists from various disciplines take part in the exhibition IKAT. They come from different generations and backgrounds, each with a vision of their own. What binds them is their Moluccan descent or their connection with the Moluccas. The concept and composition of IKAT are by Huib Akihary, art historian and curator at the Moluks Historisch Museum. He asked the question: "What does Moluccan identity mean to you and how does that relate to your work?" The result shows a many-sided perspective in which different views and disciplines lie side by side. They come together and interlock like a woven fabric, connected to one another as IKAT. The presentation is a relay of 7 blocks. Together interwoven into IKAT.

The MHM opens IKAT with a series of 14 photographic portraits by the Rotterdam photographer Ed Leatemia. In his book ROLE MODELS, 70 Moluccan success stories, he shares in words and images the impressive stories of 70 Moluccans in the Netherlands who have each achieved success in their own way. The book is not only a tribute to the first generation of Moluccans in the Netherlands, but above all a way of inspiring and motivating later generations of Moluccans to get the best out of themselves. Ed Leatemia: "You cannot hope for a better past, but you can build a hopeful future."
