Screening of ‘Van Oost Naar West’ with walking dinner
Makers Jacco Krom and James Hully joined forces, which resulted in the compelling documentary Van Oost naar West (From East to West). Driven by passion and respect, the makers take you into the beauty of Moluccan-Indonesian cuisine and its history. On Sunday 16 April 2023 Van Oost Naar West is screened with a walking dinner by Senang Makan.
About the documentary Van Oost Naar West
Van Oost naar West is a documentary about the food and the people of the former Dutch East Indies. The journeys these two have made cannot be seen separately from each other. Besides showing the love, passion and joy that Indonesian food brings, the other side cannot go unmentioned. Colonisation, industrialisation and appropriation. This too is the hard truth behind the history of the beautiful culinary culture that was taken over by the Netherlands. The dark page of colonisation.
In the documentary the makers follow the Moluccan restaurant owner Chesron Nanuru. Inspired by dishes from his family, he still cooks authentic Moluccan-Indonesian food. In his desire to preserve the culture he tries, despite the difficult times his restaurant is going through, to hand the baton on to the next generation.
About the makers
Jacco Krom (22) has been fascinated by food since he was small. Alongside his love of cooking, which has developed over the years, his curiosity and urge to tell stories grew. James Hully (22) shares that same urge. With his passion for film he wants to make stories visual in a unique and innovative way. As a third-generation Moluccan he feels strongly connected to the Moluccan community and wants to use his skills to tell underexposed stories of Moluccans in the Netherlands. The fascination with food and the passion for film come together in the documentary Van Oost Naar West.
Programme
Besides the screening of the documentary, we will talk with makers Jacco and James. The main character of the documentary, restaurant owner Chesron Nanuru, will also join this Q&A. Chesron of Senang Makan will then stimulate all your senses during a ‘making papeda’ demonstration and, with his team, provide a delicious authentic Moluccan-Indonesian walking dinner.
