Under the spell of Cengkeh
On Friday 21 April 2023, Museum Sophiahof and Museum Maluku present the interactive evening programme 'Under the spell of Cengkeh', or cloves. With author and teacher Erno Pickee we go on a historical journey through the heartbreaking story behind Molo Uku.
Erno tells the story…
Erno first takes you back to the period before the VOC. Where did it all begin? "Five thousand years ago the pharaohs in Egypt were already using cloves for rituals." Spices were the driving force behind great voyages of discovery, the basis of wars between kingdoms and the origin of the prosperity of many cities. The search for spices was therefore one of the roots of European expansion, and so the Netherlands too eventually reached the source: Maluku.
After a short break the historical journey continues: what happened after the Dutch arrived in the Moluccas? Themes such as the value of cengkeh to Europeans and the power of a cengkeh monopoly for the Netherlands are hot topics of the evening.
Molo Uku
Molo Uku is a graphic novel (a trilogy) about the conquest of the Moluccas by the VOC in 1621. The story is told from the point of view of 2 Moluccan boys whose father, a tribal leader, fights the Dutch. After the programme the books are on sale and you have the chance to have them signed by author Erno Pickee.
