IKAT temporary exhibition

On 21 March 1951, the motor vessel Kota Inten arrived in the port of Rotterdam. It was the first troop transport to bring Moluccan soldiers and their families from Indonesia to the Netherlands. 11 troop transports followed in the months after that. The last transport arrived on 21 June 1951. More than 12,500 Moluccan men, women and children made the crossing to the Netherlands. They had come from far away, and their stay was meant to be temporary. This year marks exactly 70 years since then.
The Moluks Historisch Museum wants to draw attention to 70 years of Moluccans in the Netherlands with the temporary exhibition IKAT.
This exhibition also features 21 artists of Moluccan descent or with ties to the Moluccas. Men, women, young, older, up-and-coming talent and established names, traditional versus modern, craftsmanship and new techniques, refined or bold. Different disciplines come together and interlock like a fabric, connected to one another like IKAT.
The museum asked all artists to respond to 70 years of living in the Netherlands. #origin, #arrival and #future. Past, present and future. What does identity mean to you and how does that relate to your work?”
21 artists show their work in relay form across 7 rounds. Together they form IKAT.
