Dimangio may sound exotic, but it's the Italian brand name of my father's wedding suit. My mother is from Tanimbar and my father comes from Halmahera. So I'm really a mix of the South and North Moluccas.
From my grandparents I learned never to give up hope.
To fight for what you believe in and to try to make the best of it, whatever the situation. Being positive and having a fighting spirit are characteristic Moluccan traits. I apply these in my daily life too, when I'm not in the ring.
I am truly grateful to my ancestors for how and where we ended up. I never dreamed of a particular job. But I was certain that I wanted to do something with sport, become an athlete or a successful coach. As a young boy I started with Kyokushin karate, with my father as my teacher. The best moment of my career as a martial artist was when I won my first A-class bout by knockout in 2016. In the third round I landed a perfectly clean high kick to my opponent's jaw. I have also won championship titles in
the Benelux, Europe and the Caribbean.
I have various role models, such as Mike Tyson, Michael Jordan and also Badr Hari, who climbed to the top in their sport. Their success stories inspire me.
To be successful, in my view, you have to chase your dreams and not let anyone stop you. You always have to persevere when things get tough. That's how you eventually reach your goal.
Dimangio is third generation. Grandson of Kamery Jano (1927), a private 2nd class from the island of Karaka near Tobelo in the North Moluccas. Grandfather Jano came to the Netherlands with the Skaubryn. Dimangio's grandfather Armus Fatbinan (1925) came as a private 1st class with the Fairsea. Grandfather Fatbinan's village of origin is Otimer on the island of Yamdena, part of the Tanimbar archipelago.
